The Number Seven in the Bible

Goal
The goal of this analysis is to list verses that may help you to reach some conclusions about the significance of the number seven in God's Bible.
   

In the beginning...

  • On Day 7, God ended His work of creation.
  • God rested on Day 7.
  • God blessed Day 7.
  Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the 7th day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the 7th day from all His work which He had done.

Then God blessed the 7th day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
Gen 2.1-3

The Flood...

  • Noah's father, Lamech -- the "last of his generation" -- died at age 777.
  • 7 pairs (male and female) of every clean animal were taken aboard Noah's ark.
  • Just before God sent the Great Flood, He gave Noah 7 days "advance notice."
  And all the days of Lamech were 777 years: and he died. Gen 5.31

You shall take with you 7 each of every clean animal, a male and his female... also 7 each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth.
Gen 7.2a, 7.3

After 7 more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made."
Gen 7.4

Egypt
God sent Pharaoh a dream of 7 fat cows and 7 emaciated cows. Joseph interpreted the dream to mean...

  • 7 years of plentiful food
  • 7 years of famine
 

The 7 good cows are 7 years... The 7 thin and ugly cows which came up after them are 7 years... God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do...

  • 7 years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt
  • After that, 7 years of famine will arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten Gen 41.26-29
God's lamp
God designed the candlestick for His tabernacle such that it has 7 candle holders -- one atop the shaft, and one atop each of the candlestick's 6 branches
  (God said..) You shall make 7 lamps for it, and they shall arrange its lamps so that they give light in front of it. Exod 25.37

Passover feast
God decreed that the annual Passover will...

  • Begin on the 14th day (7 + 7) of the 1st month
  • Have a duration of 7 days
  • Culminate with a holy convocation (an assembly of God's people) on the 7th day
 

On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the LORD'S Passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD...

  • 7 days you must eat unleavened bread.
  • You shall offer an offering made by fire to the LORD for 7 days.
  • The 7th day shall be a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it. extracts from Lev 23.5-8
Pentecost
God decreed that the annual Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) shall be celebrated on the day after the passage of 7 weeks (i.e., after 7 sets of 7 days)
  You shall count 7 weeks for yourself... Then you shall keep the Feast of Weeks to the LORD your God Deu 16.9a and 16.10a

Feast of Tabernacles
God decreed that the annual Feast of Tabernacles will...

  • Be celebrated in the 7th month
  • Commence on the 15th day (1 day after 7 + 7 days)
  • Have a 7 day duration
  Speak to the children of Israel, saying: 'The fifteenth day of this 7th month shall be the Feast of Tabernacles for 7 days to the LORD. Lev 23.34
Sabbath of Days
God decreed the Sabbath to be on the 7th day of each week
 

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy...

  • Six days you shall labor and do all your work
  • The 7th day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work Exod 20.8-10a

Sabbath of Years
God decreed the 7th year to be a Sabbath of rest for the land.

Obviously, when the land rested, so also did the people who worked the land.
  (God said...) When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a sabbath to the LORD. Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather its fruit; but in the 7th year there shall be a sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a sabbath to the LORD. You shall neither sow your field nor prune your vineyard. Lev 25.2-4

Jubilee
God decreed Jubilee, the Sabbath of annual Sabbaths, to be celebrated after the passage of each set of 7 times 7 years.

In every Jubilee year...

  • All indentured servants were set free
  • All debts were rendered nil
  • All property was returned to its original owners
  You shall count 7 sabbaths of years for yourself, 7 times 7 years; and the time of the 7 sabbaths of years shall be to you forty-nine years.

Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the 7th month...

You shall... proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you. Each of you shall return to his possession, and each of you shall return to his family.

Victory at Jericho

  • 7 priests sounded 7 trumpets (shofar), as Israel's army marched around Jericho once a day for 6 days.
  • On the 7th day, 7 priests sounded 7 shofar as Israel's army marched around Jericho 7 times.
  • On the 7th circuit of Jericho, as the priests sounded the 7th blast of shofar, the city's walls collapsed and Jericho was conquered!
  7 priests bearing 7 trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually and blew with the trumpets. ...they marched around the city (Jericho) once and returned to the camp. So they did six days.

On the 7th day ...they marched around the city 7 times. The 7th time it happened, when the priests blew the trumpets ...the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat.

In the book of Revelation we find...

  • 7 churches
  • 7 candlesticks
  • 7 Spirits
  • 7 stars
  • 7 seals
  • 7 trumpets
  • 7 thunders,
  • 7 vials
  • 7 plagues
  • and seven angels to pour them out.
 

Also, Seven is associated with...

  • Sacrifice (2 Chron 29:21; Job 42:8)
  • Purification and consecration (Lev 27:34; 8:11,33; 14:9,51)
  • Forgiveness (Mt 18:21-22; Lk 17:4)
  • Reward (Deu 28:7; 1Sam 2:5)
  • Punishment (Lev 26:21,24,28; Deu 28:25)
