Born Again!

Introduction
The term "born again" is taken from a conversation between Jesus and a Pharisee named Nicodemus.

During this conversation, Jesus told Nicodemus that a person must be
BORN AGAIN in order to be saved from sin and go to Heaven.
Jesus answered and said to him (Nicodemus), "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3.3
It is a puzzlement!
The term "born again" puzzled Nicodemus, and it puzzles lots of folks nowadays, as well.

If we can understand
WHY a new birth is necessary, then probably we can get a better idea of what being "born again" means.
Nicodemus said to Him (Jesus), "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" John 3.4
The WHY of rebirth
To start our study of "the WHY of re-birth," we must first examine what the Bible says about the make-up of human beings.
Namely, the Bible indicates that people are a trinity of body-soul-spirit...
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thes 5.23
  • Each person's soul and spirit are so closely related that the Bible sometimes uses the words "soul" and "spirit" interchangeably.
  • The close relationship of soul and spirit is emphasized by the verse shown alongside.
  • The REAL you is your soul-spirit -- the YOU that will either go to hell or heaven after you die.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit Heb 4.12a
  • Your body of flesh is a like a tent, wherein dwells your soul-spirit, which is the REAL you.
For we know that if our earthly house, this tent (our body of flesh), is destroyed, we have a building (a glorified, immortal body) from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Cor 5.1

Physical life... and death
The basis for your
PHYSICAL aliveness is the unity of your soul-spirit with your body...

  • When your soul-spirit is separated from your body, you are physically dead.
The body without the spirit is dead... James 2.26a

Spiritual life... and death
The basis for your
SPIRITUAL aliveness is the unity of your soul-spirit with God...

  • When your soul-spirit is separated from God, you are spiritually dead.
He who has the Son (Jesus) has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 1 John 5.12

Spiritual aliveness is NOT the natural state of the human race because...

  • Every person has a "sin nature" from the very day of his or her birth.
Behold, I was brought forth (born) in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Ps 51.5

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Rom 3.23
  • Your sin nature separates your soul-spirit from unity with God.
But your sins have separated you from your God...
Isa 59.2a
  • As long as your soul-spirit remains separated from God by unforgiven sin, you are spiritually dead in your sins.
And you, being dead in your sins... Col 2.13a
How to be made spiritually ALIVE
The verse alongside shows that your soul-spirit will be made alive toward God when you receive forgiveness for your sins.
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He (God) has made alive together with Him (Jesus), having forgiven you all trespasses Col 2.13
  • The "making alive" of your soul-spirit is what Jesus referred to a being "born again."
(Jesus said...) Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3.3
  • In order to be born again, you need only to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Believe on Jesus and be saved!
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 1 John 5.1

If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead,
you will be saved. Rom 10.9
  • When you receive Jesus, you are instantly born again as a NEW creation!
If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Cor 5.17

The newborn child of God
Having been born again, your soul-spirit starts its life as a "babe in Christ."

  • Newborn babies need MILK! The verse alongside points you to Mother's Breast.
As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby 1 Pet 2.2
  • Newborn babies sometimes make a mess in their diapers. The verse alongside tells you how to get a bath and a diaper change.
If we confess our sins, He (God) is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1.9
  • Newborn babies need a loving FAMILY. Not to worry -- you have been born again as God's own son or daughter!
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God Rom 8.16

"I will be a Father to you, and
you shall be My sons and daughters," says the LORD Almighty. 2 Cor 6.18
  • You are born again, not as an orphan, but as a forever member of God's FAMILY.
  • Little newborn believer-in-Christ, God IS your Father -- your "Abba" -- your sweet Papa -- your adoring Daddy!

NOTE: That's the reason why Christians call each other "brother" and "sister." Kids with the same Dad really ARE brothers and sisters. Halleluyah!

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! 1 John 3.1a

And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "
Abba, Father!" Gal 4.6

Growing up in Christ
Believer-in-Christ, hang on to your Father's hand. As you walk with Him, your newborn soul-spirit will grow up big and strong and beautiful.

  • Yes, you will often fall. Yes, you will often fail. But your loving Father will always pick you up, dust you off, and put you right back on the road to eternal life.
  • Count on it!
being confident of this very thing, that He (God) who has begun a good work in you WILL complete it until the day of Jesus Christ Philippians 1.6
  • And if someone tells you, "Little babe-in-Christ, you are such a puny excuse of a so-called Christian. What do you expect to be when you grow up?"
  • Then you just answer, "When I grow up, I want to be JUST LIKE Jesus!"

And so you shall be. Count on it!

Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He (Lord Jesus) is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 1 John 3.2
